"Sands of Time:" After being diagnosed with inoperable cancer, Nicole can feel what time she has slipping away. Like many, she has told herself she would do the things she has always dreamed of "later". Pressed for time, later has come: she's going to see the world. She planned to start with Scotland, and go on from there, but once she arrives she meets a man she can't resist. Ciarnan offers her a hope for the future she had given up on having, but it comes with a price. For Ciarnan is not what he appears to be, and his race can't risk anyone finding out they exist.

"Turning Back Time:" Devastated at the news of her friend's supposed death, Julie rushes to Scotland to find some answers. What she finds instead is Roarke. Unwilling to let go of her search, Julie winds up finding what happened to Nicole, and finding her own chance at happiness, if she can accept that Roarke isn't human.

"Sands of Time:"

"With treatments, we could buy you some time, but we'll have to be aggressive with it."

"So what are you saying? I can stay here, in the hospital getting poison pumped through my veins, in the hopes that I will live a month or two longer, most of which time I will either spend in pain or throwing up. Or I can just walk away and try to enjoy the time I have left."

"Nicole, I'm sorry, but we caught it too late. There is no way to completely cure you. But we can prolong what time you have."

Shaking her head, she waved the doctor away when he moved to pat her shoulder. Feeling the heat of her tears on her cheeks, she swiped at them with the back of her hand, determined to meet this thing head on.

"I'm sorry, Doc, but I can't-I won't-live out what time I have left in pain and misery. I'll take the few months I have and do the things I always pushed off for some day. Well some day is here dammit!"

She could feel his sympathetic gaze following her as she opened the door and stepped out of the room. Nurses passed her by, their gazes lowered. Frustrated, Nicole tossed her paperwork on the counter and waited for the clerk to hand her back her forms for her insurance.

"I'm sorry, Nicole, I don't see a scheduled time for your next visit. Let me just call the doctor and ask him when he-"

Nicole cut her off. "Don't bother. There won't be another appointment." Leaning forward, she grabbed her copy of the paperwork from the startled clerk's hand and walked out, the door swishing closed behind her.

"Turning Back Time:"

Julie knew something was wrong before she picked up the phone. Ever since Nicole had gone off to Scotland on her own, determined to live out what time she had by doing the things she'd always dreamed of, Julie had unconsciously been waiting for her friend to call. Or for someone to call on her behalf.

"I should have gone with her," she thought, as she picked the phone up from the cradle. "No news at two a.m. is ever good."

"Hello," she rasped, her voice still husky with sleep, even if her mind was fully awake.

"Ms. Anderson?" Her eyes snapped open at the grave tone of the man on the phone.

"This is she."

"Ms. Anderson, I'm sorry to have to tell you like this, but your friend Nicole Jefferies is dead. She got too close to the cliff and fell. We think it was an accident, rather than intentional. We're still trying to recover her body, but with the current this time of-"

Julie cut him off. "If you don't have her body, how do you know she's dead?"

"I know this is difficult, but-"

Despite it being rude, she interrupted again, not willing to give him a chance to say she didn't need to go there. Of course she needed to go. Nicole would have done the same for her.

"Look, I'm catching the next flight out."

"Really, that's not necessary-"

Without giving him time to continue, Julie hung up. Sitting up in her bed, her blonde hair in wild disarray around her face, Julie felt the warmth of tears on her cheeks. In a move that reminded her so much of her friend, she stubbornly brushed them away. There was no way Nicole was dead, not yet. It already wasn't fair that she only had a few more months left. Fate couldn't be so cruel to take that time away from her.
