Private Investigations
They entered the apartment building’s front door without having to be buzzed in, thanks to a broken lock, and crept up the emergency stairs all the way to the fourth floor because Jade insisted they could not risk being seen in the elevator. Donna didn’t argue since by the time they reached Daniel’s apartment door she was too out of breath to say much of anything.
She braced one hand on the hallway wall and attempted to slow her racing heart as Jade kneeled on the floor with her ear pressed to the door.
“Why are you kneeling to listen?”
Jade put one finger in front of her lips and hissed out a ‘shhh’. “I don’t want them to see me out the peep hole.”
Donna didn’t exactly get the wisdom of that theory. If Daniel and whoever were doing what Jade imagined them doing, Donna doubted they would be spending a whole lot of time manning the peephole.
“Oh my god! I think I just heard a moan.” Jade grabbed Donna’s hand and pulled her down. “You listen. See if you hear it.”
Trying to ignore the unsanitary things that might be lurking there, Donna knelt on the stained and dingy carpeted floor near the door. “I don’t hear anything.”
“Keep listening. I distinctly heard something,” Jade whispered.
Donna pressed her ear closer to the door but that served only to block out all sound. Maybe they should go get a drinking glass, wasn’t that supposed to work for eavesdropping through walls? A stethoscope might help, but where could they find one of those at this time of night?
Her pondering of where the nearest all-night store carrying medical supplies might be located was interrupted by a deep, masculine, “Ahem.”
Both Jade and Donna let out a yelp of surprise. Donna’s heart rate began to race again as she turned and looked up at a long jean-clad leg that ended at the waist with a belt and a very mean and official-looking holstered gun. “Uh oh,” she whispered to Jade.
The stranger’s brown eyes bore into them both in turn. “Can I help you two ladies?”
Between Love & Hate
“Snap out of it, Jade. You can’t go on like this with Daniel. You have to confront him. Today.”
Uh, oh. Donna was taking the tough love approach. Jade had seen her get like this when Grace was acting ridiculous, but Donna’s wrath had never been directed at her before.
“I know I do.” Jade felt her eyes begin to fill with tears again and laughed bitterly. “Can’t do it tonight, though. He’s ‘working late’ again at the office.” She snorted at what that probably meant. Donna was right. This was tearing her apart. She couldn’t live in limbo like this any longer.
“Go and confront him there,” Grace suggested. “If Daniel isn’t at the office when he said he would be, you will have proof he wasn’t there because you were. If he is there with someone else, you’ll catch him red-handed. Right, Sam? What’s your professional opinion as an ex-cop and private investigator?”
At Grace’s question, Sam looked up from inspecting the piece of olive bread in his hand with an expression of surprised horror on his face that was laughable. “Oh, no. I’m not getting involved in this.”
Grace scowled. “Why? Male solidarity? Are you siding with Daniel on this?”
Sam’s brow furrowed into a frown. “No. I’m just staying out of it.”
“You are Daniel’s neighbor. Have you ever seen that woman there before or since?” Donna queried.
Jade waited for Sam’s reply.
“Only that once and honestly, I literally only saw her walking into the apartment. Nothing more.”
She let out a long breath of relief at his answer.
Donna looked at Jade with her stern face again. “You really do need to confront him.”
Jade nodded. “I know. Will you guys come with me to his office tonight?”
Grace swallowed a gulp of wine. “Sure.”
“Of course, Jade.” Donna nodded and then turned to Sam expectantly.
He opened his eyes wide. “Oh, no. I’m not going. I’ll wait right here for you to get back.”
Donna scowled. “Fine.”
“There is one problem. It’s a secure building. There is a guard twenty-four hours a day on the desk in the lobby and after hours, the front door is locked,” Jade informed them all.
“Hmm. That could be an issue.” Donna sighed.
“No way. This one could flirt her way past anybody. Look at her! If the guy has a pulse, we’ll get in.” Grace hooked a thumb at Jade. “And we’ll both show some boob too, just in case. Who wouldn’t let the three of us in?”
Sam looked up at the ceiling helplessly and mumbled. “God help me.”
Donna raised a brow at him. “If you came with us, you could help us get in. Flash a badge or something.”
“First of all, I don’t have a badge any longer. Second, all Jade has to do is talk to Daniel, not sneak into his office. If you had talked to me instead of jumping to conclusions that first night, you would have saved us both a lot of grief. And third, I repeat, I am not getting involved in this.”
Donna shrugged. “Fine. I only hope the three of us don’t end up in jail.”
Sam rolled his eyes. “You do and I’ll get you out…tomorrow morning, after you’ve all learned your lesson.”
There was a resounding, “Hmmph!” from Donna and Jade had a feeling Sam wouldn’t be getting any that night. But she couldn’t worry about her friend’s sex life. They had a break-in to stage, an office to infiltrate and an alibi to crack.
Saving Grace
What do you like to do in bed?”
Grace closed her mouth when she noticed it had popped open at his forwardness. But then again, they had already had cyber sex together. It’s not like they had not already shared an incredible orgasm or two.
“Um, I don’t know. The usual stuff I guess.” She shrugged. She remembered the way he described on instant messenger what incredible things he would do to her if they were together and added. “I like the same things as you.”
Guy’s eyes lit up. “Really. That’s good to know. Hey, you know what I just bought?”
Her interest piqued at the renewal of the shopping topic. “What?”
“A sex swing. I haven’t installed it yet. They tell you it is really important to install the hook correctly, but I think it’s all bullshit just so you can’t sue them if you do it wrong. They have to cover their ass. We know how that is. We’re both lawyers.”
She nodded, covering her ignorance until she decided to simply confess the truth. “What’s a sex swing?”
His eyes opened wide and he laughed. “You don’t know? It’s a swing that hangs from the ceiling. You get in it and I can put you in pretty much any position I want while I fuck you. There’s this one move called the Chinese Basket where I spin you around while I’m in you. I’m dying to try that.”
Grace considered herself a modern woman when it came to sex. After all, she did come prepared with her own condoms. But this might be more than she could handle. Would being with her dream lover/secret admirer mean having to be hung from the ceiling and spun while impaled on her lover’s penis?
She realized he was watching her expectantly, waiting for a reaction or comment or something. “Oh, that sounds like fun.” Good thing she was a Thespian in school and could act with the best of them.
